Newsletter – January 2012

A Happy New Year to one and all. Hopefully this will be a year that brings even more success to the club.

With the Olympics in London later on in the year it would be good for the excitement surrounding this to rub off on our athletes and hopefully encourage new athletes to join.

December review

The month started off with the third round of the Hampshire League Cross Country races, this time the venue being Popham Airfield near Basingstoke. A very successful day saw teams compete in the U13 & U15 girls, U13 & U15 boys and senior/vet men. Unfortunately no senior/vet women’s team with only Lyn Davis running. The U15 boys team won their League with the U13 girls coming second in theirs. The U13 boys came fourth and that was with both James Fleming and Ross Maxwell both suffering illness. The senior men came first in their Division 3 League and second in their Division 2 veteran League.

After three events the U13 girls are currently second in the overall standings, the U15 girls ninth, the U13 boys third and the U15 boys also third. The men are 1st in the Senior Men Division 3 and third in the Veteran Division 2. Individually we have the following athletes in the top ten; U15 boys Rian McCawley (8th), U13 boys James Fleming (3rd) and Daniel Cooke (8th). The girls tables unfortunately do not show individual rankings.

The following day saw the first Sportshall dedicated to U11 age group. What a group of athletes we have here with unrivalled success on the day. The boys won their competition outright, while the girls came equal first, with Dorking & Mole Valley AC.

The second Border League Cross Country event was held on Sunday 11th December. At the conclusion of another successful day we currently lie 1st in the girls overall competition and second in the boys overall. In the U11 age category we are second in the girls and third in the boys. Both our U13 and U15 girls lead their categories and both the U13 & U15 boys are second.

Individually we had the following top ten finishes:- In her first race for Camberley Amy Dove came 2nd in the girls U9 race, Emily Rodenburg also came 2nd in the girls U11. In the girls U13’s Peony Myall, Sarah Heddle, Alicia Martin and Lucy Sturton came 3rd, 4th, 5th and 9th respectively. The U15 girls had similar success with Ria Wingfield, Madeline Dodd and Beth Heddle 2nd, 5th and 6th respectively. In the U11 boys Max Heydon was 4th and Matthew Oakley 9th. Ross Maxwell was 3rd and Aiden Grainger 4th in the boys U13’s with a special mention to Alex Rodrigues who came 10th, not bad for a hurdler! Finally Nathan Mapperley came 2nd in the boys U15 race.

The day before the Border League several Camberley athletes were representing Surrey at the SEAA Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships in Croydon. The athletes were Peony Myall in the U13 girls team which finished second, James Fleming and Daniel Cooke in the U13 boys team which came fourth and Rian McCawley in the U15 boys which also came second. Well done to all of you on your county selection.

On Sunday 18th Reigate Priory held their annual Holly Run. Several of our athletes made the trip and came back with excellent performances. In the girls U11 Emily Rodenburg continued to impress by winning her race. In the Boys U13 James Fleming came second and in the U15 boys Rian McCawley also came second with brother Brogan in 5th place.

Coming up

There’s a busy start to the New Year with events over each weekend. First up on Saturday 7th January is Surrey Cross Country Championships at Denbies Vineyard, Dorking. You should all have replied to John’s e-mail about this. If not then I’m afraid you’re too late.

Next up on 14th January is round 4 of the Hampshire League Cross Country races. This one is to be held at Kings Park, Bournemouth an area close to the Athletics track. For those in later races don’t leave it too late to arrive as AFC Bournemouth have a football league match at their close by stadium the same day.

It’s back indoors on 22 January for the third and final Sportshall event. If you haven’t done one of these it is your last chance of the winter to do so (unless you’re an U11) and these are a great fun eventwhere you can compete without getting cold and wet!

Saturday 28th January is the date for the South of England Cross Country Championships to be held this year in Stanmer Park, Brighton. If you haven’t let John know about this yet then I’m afraid you are too late as he needed entries before Christmas.

The following day will see the third round of the Border League Cross Country races. The venue for this will be Stoke Park in Guildford. After our excellent start it will be good to see as many athlete’s as possible to continue the success.

Fundraising

As can be seen from above the club is achieving a lot of success at the moment. There is still more that can be achieved though and to help with the development of all our athletes we need to keep updating and improving our equipment and facilities. Below are two ways in which additional funds can be brought into the club. Next month I will tell you of a third initiative to help raise funds. If anyone has any other ideas on how funds can be raised please get in touch with me (e-mail address below)

To update you on matters relating to http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/cdac I can report that in the last quarter £16.50 was raised for the club by four people. Since the last newsletter we have only had 4 more people register with the site. There are plenty of you out there I am sure that shop online. This really is an easy way for raising funds for the club that costs you absolutely nothing. If 4 people can raise £16.50 in less than three months think how much more could be raised by registering and doing your online shopping through Easyfundraising.

Did any of you get a brand new shiny mobile phone for Christmas and don’t know what to do with the old one? Well we have the answer, Matt Greenwood is collecting old mobile phones. You should have a message from Matt with details of this scheme attached to the e-mail.

Should anyone have any interesting stories or information related to the Athletics Club please feel free to send them to me at simon.harvey43@ntlworld.com

Some of you may be unaware but we have our own Facebook page. For those of you who are registered on Facebook you can leave comments. However to view the pages you don’t need to be registered to just have a look. Click here to visit the page.
